0/200Fruit Custard is a beloved Indian household dessert that reflects the colonial-era fusion of British custard with Indian fruit abundance. Introduced during the British Raj in the 19th century, custard powder (a cornstarch-based vanilla thickener) was quickly adopted by Indian home cooks, who adapted it with a generous hand of tropical and seasonal fruits — mangoes, pomegranates, grapes, apples, and bananas — creating a dessert that is lighter, fresher, and more colorful than its European predecessor. It became a staple of Indian summer dining, school tiffin boxes, and family gatherings, prized for its simplicity and the way it showcases fresh fruit. At Raunak, we prepare a silky milk custard lightly sweetened and infused with vanilla, chill it until set, and fold in a colorful medley of seasonal fresh fruits just before serving. Served chilled.
Fruit custard is one of the healthiest Indian desserts. The milk base provides calcium, protein, and vitamins. The mixed fruits contribute dietary fiber, vitamin C (from citrus and berries), potassium (from bananas), and a wide range of antioxidants. Because the sweetness is moderate and partly from the fruit's natural sugars, it is lower in added sugar than most traditional Indian sweets. It is also the lowest-glycemic dessert on the menu.
